Words a day

1,667

50,000 words in 30 days, rounded up.

Days left include today. 50,000 ÷ 30 = 1,666.67, rounded up to 1,667.

The formula

Words per day = words still to write ÷ days left, rounded up. Days left include today and the deadline. A 50,000-word draft in 30 days is 1,667 words a day, because 50,000 ÷ 30 is 1,666.67 and the page rounds up.

If you have already written some of it, subtract that first. 10,000 words done on a 50,000-word target leaves 40,000. Over 30 days that is 1,334 words a day.

How to use the number

Split the daily number into sprints instead of facing it as one lump. At about 500 words a sprint, 1,667 words is four sprints. The writing sprint timer on this site is a plain countdown for that.

Inka can hold a daily word goal in the writing room. The default goal is 500 words, and a thin line at the bottom of the screen fills as you get closer. A target for one piece, such as a chapter, is part of Pro. This calculator does not store what you type.
