Help: saving, sync, offline and export

Where is my writing saved?

On your device, as you type. Your writing never leaves it unless you sign in.

Your pieces are under Settings, Pieces, or the All pieces link at the bottom of Export.
Earlier versions keeps a copy for each of the last seven days you wrote. Restoring asks first.
If storage fills up, Inka says Saving is paused. Export, then clear space.
Clearing your browser's site data deletes your writing on that device. Sign in or export first.

Sign-in and sync

Pieces and the words you add to the dictionary sync. Rooms, sounds, settings and stats stay on each device.
Syncs a moment after you stop typing, every two minutes, and when you return to the tab.
Same piece changed on two devices: the newer change wins.
Written while signed out: kept, and uploaded next time you sign in.
Signing out leaves everything on the device.

Does Inka work offline?

Yes, once it has loaded on that device. Writing, pieces, timers and sounds you have used all work. You can install it from your browser's menu.

Needs a connection: sign-in and sync, animated rooms (one you have not opened shows its still picture; one you have just watched usually keeps playing), Spotify, YouTube backgrounds, Google Docs.

How do I get my writing out?

Download .docx, opens in Word, Pages and Google Docs.
Send to Google Docs makes a real Google Doc and keeps it updated while you write. Lasts for the browser session. Inka keeps no copy of your Google sign-in.
A piece is titled from its first words until you name it: Settings, Pieces, the pencil on its card. The name becomes the file name.

What is free?

Writing, saving, sync, export, the journal, Legible mode. Always.

Also free: 10 of 30 rooms, 8 of 19 sounds, the Cream key sound, timers up to 25 minutes or open-ended, 3 pieces, 7 days of stats. A journal entry is a piece, so it counts as one of the three.

Timers and breaks

Press Study at the top of the screen, or the clock in the dock. The study room has ten looks: Flip, Candle, Ring, Hourglass, LED, Vinyl, Just the room (nothing in the middle, the block in the Timer widget at the side), and under More looks: Scribble, Sun arc, Moon. Pick a look, then how long (or time for just the clock), and the room opens. A block keeps counting if you go back to writing; the clock in the dock shows it. Your own length and repeat are under Settings, Study.

15, 25 or 50 minutes, your own number, or open-ended. Past 25 minutes is Pro.
When a block ends, Inka offers a break, then brings you back.
Repeat with breaks: block, five-minute break, block, until you leave.

Page and text

With pictures: customize your writing space.

Page behind the words: None, Clear, White, Ruled.
Fonts: Serif, Sans, Mono, Atkinson. Sliders for size, spacing, opacity.
Legible mode: Atkinson Hyperlegible, wider spacing, taller lines. Always free.
Auto-settle after a pause: 1 to 4 seconds, or never. Enter settles at once.
Backspace on an empty line lets you edit the last sentence where it sits.
No bold, headings or toolbar: Inka is for the draft. Paragraphs, bullets and indents are kept, and Export carries them into Google Docs or Word, where the formatting happens.
Catch typos underlines likely typos after a sentence settles. Runs on your device only.
Cmd+' jumps to the next underline, Cmd+; to the previous; Fix all certain in the popover fixes every sure one at once, Cmd+Z takes it back.

Journal, goals and streaks

Today's journal opens today's entry or starts one. An entry is a piece, so on the free plan it is one of your three.
Daily word goal, 500 by default. A thin line along the bottom edge fills as you go.
The flame in the dock is your streak. A day counts when you hit the goal.
Word target is a goal for one piece. Pro.

Billing

Cancel: Settings, Account, Manage billing. Pro stays on until the period ends.
Lifetime: One payment. Never renews.
Refunds: Something wrong? Email writeinka@gmail.com within 14 days.
