Inka vs OmmWriter

Inka and OmmWriter both put writing in a quiet scene with sound. This page is written by the people who make Inka. OmmWriter is often the better buy if you want a native app and a single payment.

The short version

OmmWriter is a desktop app for Mac and Windows, made by Byteberry. It opens full screen, with its own backgrounds and music, and you pay once. Inka is a writing room in the browser. You can start free, with no install. Pro is $7 a month, $49 a year, or $99 once.

OmmWriter's details below come from their FAQ and their shop, read on 29 September 2026. If a price or a feature has changed, their site is the one to trust. Inka's limits are from the app, and they are listed on the facts page.

Where OmmWriter is the better choice

  • You want a real app, full screen, with no browser tabs beside the page.
  • You would rather pay once than consider a subscription. On 29 September 2026 the minimum on their shop was below a year of Inka Pro ($49).
  • You want their backgrounds and music as one designed environment, and you do not need to mix several sounds or paste your own video.
  • You want the draft as a file on the computer, with backups, and no piece limit.
  • You need scripts their FAQ lists beyond Latin: Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, and others.

OmmWriter's current line is Gaia. Their FAQ says a Gaia purchase (Mac from July 2017, Windows from December 2019) can be updated from their download page. Older purchases need a new licence. OmmWriter's site.

Where Inka fits

Inka fits if you want to start in a browser tab, free, with no install. Ten of the 30 rooms are free, eight of the nineteen sounds are free, and you can mix those sounds at separate volumes. Spotify can play in the page. A timer sits in the same room. Legible mode is free. The draft stays on the device unless you sign in.

Inka is the weaker choice if you need a native app, a one-time price under their shop minimum, or files that live in a folder with no browser involved. Free Inka also stops at three pieces. A fourth piece, timers over 25 minutes, the rest of the rooms and sounds, and your own background are Pro.

Who should pick neither

Pick a full editor if you need comments, track changes, a binder of research, or Markdown as the file format. OmmWriter's FAQ says it does not save Markdown. Inka is a writing room, not a word processor. Neither product is a place to have a model draft the chapter.
