LifeAt alternatives for writers

LifeAt is a focus workspace: scenes, a timer, sound, tasks, notes, a planner, and calendars. This page is for writers who want a place to draft. The list is alphabetical. It is not a ranking. The people who make Inka wrote it, and Inka is one entry, not the first.

Stay with LifeAt if it already fits

LifeAt's own site describes a browser workspace for planning a day and focusing in a scene. On 10 October 2026, their pricing page showed a free plan with limited background spaces, and Pro with 1,000+ spaces, a daily planner, an ambient soundboard, tasks, notes, calendars, and a Pomodoro timer. Pro was $8 a month billed yearly, or $12 a month billed monthly, both marked early bird, with a Business tier above it. Check that page before you pay.

LifeAt is the better product if you want tasks, a planner, and calendars in the same window as the scene, or a very large library of study spaces, or virtual co-working. It is a place to organize work. It is not built as a manuscript. Notes are there. A long draft is not the point of the product.

If that is what you wanted, stop here and use LifeAt.

Alternatives, in alphabetical order

These are tools a writer might open instead of LifeAt. Order is A to Z so this page does not crown anyone, including us.

Calmly Writer

Calmly Writer is a distraction-free editor in the browser. It is a page for the words, with a typewriter mode and a focus mode, and you can write without installing it. It does not do LifeAt's scenes, tasks, or soundboard. Choose it when the writing surface should be plain and the room is a distraction.

Flocus

Flocus is a browser focus site with scenes and timers, in the same family as LifeAt. It is a place to time a session, not a manuscript. Choose it if you want an aesthetic study room and you will keep the draft in another app.

FocusWriter

FocusWriter is a free, open-source desktop app for Windows and Linux; a Mac build is no longer published, so there is nothing to download on a Mac. It is a full-screen writing window with themes, a timer, typing sounds, and daily goals. It does not run a shared study room or a task planner. Choose it when you want a native app, no subscription, and files that stay on your own disk.

iA Writer

iA Writer is a paid writing app for Mac, Windows, iPhone, and iPad, built around Markdown and a library of files. The Android app was discontinued in 2024, so there is no Android version to buy. It is stronger than LifeAt or Inka if you want a serious text editor and files you control. It does not do ambient rooms. Choose it for the writing, and add sound somewhere else if you want sound.

Inka

Inka is made by the authors of this page. It is a free writing room in the browser: 30 rooms (10 free, 11 of them animated), 19 mixable ambient sounds (8 free), a study timer, and a page for the draft. Nothing in it writes for you. Pro is $7 a month, $49 a year, or $99 once, and adds the rest of the rooms and sounds, timers over 25 minutes, unlimited pieces, and your own background. It does not have LifeAt's planner, calendars, or co-working. The limits are on the facts page. The app is at app.writeinka.com.

OmmWriter

OmmWriter is a Mac and Windows app with full-screen writing, 10 backgrounds, and its own music. You pay once. Their FAQ says you cannot bring your own images, there is no Linux version, and music and typing share one volume. A longer comparison, still written by us, is Inka vs OmmWriter. Choose OmmWriter if you want a native app and a single payment.

LifeAt is last in the table because this page is about leaving it, not because it lost. For the job it was built for, it is often the right one.

Who should not pick Inka

  • You want a to-do list, a calendar, or a daily planner in the writing window. LifeAt has those. Inka does not.
  • You want to study on a video call with other people. That is a co-working product, not a writing room.
  • You need more than three pieces and you do not want to pay. Free Inka stops at three, and a journal entry counts as one.
  • You want Markdown, a file in a folder, or a native app with no browser. Look at iA Writer, FocusWriter, or OmmWriter.
  • You want something to draft the paragraph for you. Inka will not.
