Minimalist writing app: the Inka writing app, with a short list of controls
The Inka writing app is minimal in the controls, not in the sense of a blank white box you have to stare at. You set the type and the room once. Then the page is the app.

The short list of things you can change
Text is one panel. Font: serif, sans, mono, or Atkinson. Size, line spacing, colour, and opacity. The page behind the words: none, clear, white, or ruled. Legible mode, which is Atkinson with wider tracking and taller lines, is always free and is labelled that way in the app.
That is the type system. There is no font menu of fifty families, and there is no style gallery for headings, because Inka is not laying out a document. It is holding a draft.
A plain room, if a scene is already too much
People who want a minimalist app sometimes bounce off a moving background. Ink Room is there for that. It is free, it does not move, and it is the same under a reduced-motion setting. The other free rooms are Rainy Tokyo, Moss Floor, Alpine Meadow, Window Counter, Aurora Cabin, Starlit Dunes, East River Night, Cozy Rain Room, and Cape Town Night, if a picture helps you start.
Sound is optional. Off is a free key-sound setting. You do not have to play rain to use the page.
How to start a plain session
- Open the Inka writing app and choose Ink Room.
- In Text, pick Serif or Mono, and the page style you can read for an hour.
- Leave sound off, or add one bed later if the room feels too dry.
- Write. The panels hide themselves. Move the pointer when you want them.
A minimalist app still has to keep the draft. Inka saves as you type, on the device. Three pieces are free. A fourth piece is Pro, at $7 a month, $49 a year, or $99 once.
Questions
Is the Inka writing app a Markdown editor?
No. You write prose. When you leave, you copy it, download .txt or .docx, or send it to Google Docs. You do not edit Markdown syntax in the page.
Can I hide the room and the sounds?
Yes. Ink Room has no video, and every sound can stay off. The controls still fade on their own.
Which fonts are free?
All four: serif, sans, mono, and Atkinson. Legible mode is free as well.
Is there a Mac or Windows install?
Inka runs in the browser. You can install it from the browser's menu and open it in its own window. There is no separate desktop build.
Open Inka
Set the type and the page once, then leave the panels alone and write.
