Ambient sounds for writing, in the Inka writing app

The Inka writing app is a mixer, not a single dropdown. Nineteen sounds can play together. Eight are free. Each has its own volume. The page is in the same window.

Three sounds playing at once, Soft Rain, Heavy Rain and Fireside, each with its own volume slider

The eight free sounds

Soft Rain, Heavy Rain, Fireside, Shoreline, Mountain Wind, Exam Hall, Reading Room, and Airplane Cabin. Airplane Cabin is a low cabin hum, not a soundtrack of announcements. Exam Hall is a quiet indoor hush. Shoreline is water, not a storm.

Tap a tile to start it. Move the slider. Tap again to stop. Beds fade in and out. They do not pop on at full volume.

The sounds behind Pro

Thunderstorm, Corner Café, Japanese Library, Commuter Train, NYC Morning, and Deep House. Five more are two-tone beds named Garden Path, Morning Desk, Bright Peak, Slow River, and Deep Hollow. Those five are Pro as well.

The grid also shows Dawn Chorus, marked as coming soon. It does not play. The count of sounds you can actually hear is 19.

How to mix a bed for a writing hour

  1. Start with one free sound. Soft Rain or Reading Room is usually enough.
  2. Add a second only if the first has a hole in it. Fireside under rain is the usual pair. Keep the second slider lower.
  3. If you also load a Spotify playlist, the ambient beds turn themselves down while the music is loaded. You do not have to ride both mixes by hand.
  4. Write. If the sound becomes the thing you are adjusting, you have too many sliders open. Turn one off.

Inka does not publish a page for cat sounds, dog sounds, or every animal autocomplete suggests. One mixer is the feature.

Headphones help if the room you are actually sitting in is loud. The app does not know whether you are wearing them. The sliders are the only mix.

Questions

Can I play more than one sound?

Yes. That is the point. Each sound has its own volume.

Do the free sounds expire?

No. The eight stay available. Pro adds the other playable sounds.

Do sounds work offline?

A sound you have already played can. A new one has to load once online.

Is there brown noise by that name?

No tile is named brown noise. Airplane Cabin is a low hum, and Exam Hall is a quiet room. If you need a generator labelled white, pink, or brown, this is not that site.

Open Inka

Open the sound panel, start two or three beds, and balance them by ear.
