Free novel writing app: the Inka writing app, for a long draft
You can draft a novel in the Inka writing app for free, in the browser. Keep the book in one piece and the free limit is not the problem. Split it into many chapter files and the fourth file is Pro.
How a long draft fits
A piece is the file. It can be as long as you keep typing. The title comes from the first words, and you can live with that or export under that name. Inka does not have a binder, a corkboard, character sheets, or a research sidebar. If you want those, this is the wrong app, and a project tool will serve you better.
Free allows three pieces. A novel in a single piece is one. A novel split into twenty chapter files is a Pro use, because unlimited pieces are Pro. Earlier versions keep a copy for each of the last seven days you wrote in that piece. Empty days are not stored. Restoring asks first.
Pace, without a fake leaderboard
The daily word goal is free. Set it to the number you got from the calculator. The streak counts days you met that goal, not days you merely opened the app. A word target attached to the piece itself, a running total toward 80,000, is Pro.
Short sprints help on days the daily number feels large. The sprint timer on this site is a clock and saves nothing. Inside the app, a block up to 25 minutes is free, with a break afterward if you want one.
Getting the manuscript out
Download .docx or .txt, or send the piece to Google Docs, whenever you want a copy that is not only in the browser. Do that even if you love the room. A browser can lose local storage if the site data is cleared. Export is the copy you can put in a folder.
Inka will not draft a scene, rename your characters, or suggest the next beat. The room can be rain or a cabin. The plot is still yours.
Questions
Can one free piece hold a whole novel?
Yes. Length is not capped per piece. The cap is how many pieces you can have: three on the free app.
Does Inka outline the book?
No. There is no corkboard and no chapter planner. It is a writing room.
Is there a November challenge inside the app?
Not as a branded event. You can set the daily goal and use the calculator. The November page explains the numbers. Inka is not affiliated with NaNoWriMo.
Will an AI co-author the chapter?
No. The Inka writing app does not generate prose.
