A word count goal in the Inka writing app

The Inka writing app keeps a daily word goal, free. The default is 500 words. A thin line along the bottom edge fills as you get closer. A separate target for one piece is Pro.

The daily line

Set the goal in Goals. The step is 50 words. The line is not a widget you pin and not a badge in the corner. It is the hairline at the bottom. You can ignore it. The streak, a small flame and a number in the dock, moves when you meet the goal. Opening the app is not enough.

The count is words you write in Inka that day, across the pieces you touch. It is not a Google Docs tracker and it does not read a Doc in another tab.

A goal for one piece

The piece target is labelled for an essay or a chapter. It is Pro. On the free app the field does not keep a number you type there. Use the daily goal, or track the piece in the exported document.

Stats show words and time. Free shows the last 7 days in full. Older days and the twelve-month view are Pro. The summary numbers, total words and time, are visible without Pro.

How to set a goal you can hit

  1. If you have a deadline, use the calculator. If you do not, pick a number you have actually hit before, not the number you wish you hit.
  2. Put that number in the daily goal.
  3. Use a sprint or a 25-minute block to start. The goal does not care how the words arrived.
  4. Stop when the line is full, or keep going. The line does not lock the keyboard.

Questions

Is the daily word goal free?

Yes. The default is 500. You can change it.

Does it track a Google Doc?

No. It counts words written in the Inka writing app. After you export, the Doc has its own count.

What is the difference between the daily goal and the piece target?

The daily goal is everything today, and it is free. The piece target is one draft's total, and it is Pro.

When does the streak increase?

When you meet the daily goal. A day you open the app and write nothing does not count.

Open Inka

Set the daily number, then watch the hairline at the bottom edge and nothing else.
