Typing sounds in the Inka writing app

A typing-sounds website usually lets you bang on an on-screen keyboard and listen. The Inka writing app does something narrower: while you write, the keys can make a sound. Cream is free.

Cream, the free key sound

Cream is on unless you change it. It uses a set of recorded samples, one family for letters and others for space and backspace, with a small random shift in pitch so it does not tick like a metronome. The samples load the first time you type, then they stay on the device.

Off is the other free choice. Pick it and the keys are silent. The ambient room, if any, is unchanged.

The other boards

CherryMX, Typewriter, and Panda are Pro. CherryMX is the sharper mechanical one. Panda is a third recorded set. Choosing any of them without Pro opens the upgrade sheet and leaves you on Cream.

None of these is a mechanical-keyboard showroom where you compare switches without writing. If that is the search, a switch tester will serve you better. Here the sound is a side effect of the draft.

The samples stay on the device after the first load of that pack. They are not a soundtrack file you can drop into a video editor. If you need a downloadable typing effect for an edit, this is the wrong page. If you only wanted a softer click while a draft is open, Cream is already the default and you can leave the setting alone.

How to hear it

  1. Open the app. Click or press a key once so the audio is allowed to start. Browsers require that gesture.
  2. Leave Key sound on Cream, or set it to Off.
  3. Write a sentence. The sound follows the keys, including a softer treatment of space and backspace.

Questions

Is there a free typing sound?

Yes. Cream. Off is free too, if you want silence.

Can I play typing sounds without writing?

No. They trigger from keys in the draft. There is no toy keyboard.

Is CherryMX free?

No. CherryMX, Typewriter, and Panda are Pro.

Does the sound upload what I typed?

No. The samples play locally. The manuscript is not sent out with the click.
