Writing app for students: the Inka writing app, for essays and notes
The Inka writing app is a quiet page for a draft, in the browser, including on a Chromebook. It is free to write in. It does not log in to a school system, and it does not see your assignment portal.

The job this is good at
Students usually need two different tools: a place to draft, and the document a teacher accepts. Inka is the first. Google Docs or Word is often the second. You write in the room, then send the piece to a Google Doc or download a .docx. Both exports are free.
The daily word goal is free. It defaults to 500 and can be changed. A target on one piece, "this essay is 1,200 words," is Pro. Until then, the calculator above does the arithmetic, and the document's own word count does the rest after you export.
Limits that matter for a course load
Free keeps three pieces. Today's journal counts as one of them. If you are in three classes and each essay is its own piece, you will hit the lock. You can keep one piece and export when an essay is done, or use Pro for unlimited pieces.
Inka has no citation manager, no shared comments, and no way for a teacher to open your draft inside Inka. Turn the work in from Docs or from the file you downloaded. There is no integration with a learning system.
Until you sign in, the draft lives in that browser's own storage. On a school or shared Chromebook, which can be wiped or signed out from under you, download the .docx or sign in so the piece is somewhere else too.
Legible mode uses Atkinson Hyperlegible, with wider spacing and taller lines, and it is always free. That is a type setting, not a claim about any diagnosis.
How to draft an essay and get it out
- Work out the daily number in the calculator if the essay is spread over several days.
- Write the draft in Inka. A 25-minute block is free if you want a stop.
- Open Export. Send to Google Docs, or download .docx or .txt. Copy all is there too.
- Add citations, comments, and the required format in the document you will submit. Inka does not do that formatting.
Nothing in Inka writes the essay. If a class forbids generated prose, you are typing the prose.
Questions
Can my teacher see the draft inside Inka?
No. They see it only if you export and share that file or Doc yourself.
Does Inka work on a Chromebook?
Yes. It runs in the browser, so a Chromebook opens it like any site, as long as the school allows the address. Install policies vary by school and Inka cannot override them. On a shared Chromebook that can be wiped or signed out from under you, download the .docx or sign in so the piece is somewhere else too.
Is there a citation tool?
No. Write the draft, export, and do references in the document you submit.
Are timers long enough for a study block?
Up to 25 minutes, or an open-ended timer, is free. The 50-minute preset and anything over 25 minutes are Pro.
